4 Steps to Find Your Niche as a Content Creator

Why it’s important to find your niche

With the way the content creator scene is booming, it’s more important than ever for you to stand out. Having a niche helps you do exactly that, and more.

A niche is your thing as a content creator. It not only sets you apart, but it also helps you build a dedicated audience you can connect with. By identifying your niche, you’ll learn to develop expertise in that area, establishing yourself as the go-to creator for whatever niche you choose. This, in turn, opens doors to collaborations and monetisation opportunities.

So, how do you find your niche?

  1. Start with what you like (and know)
  2. Look inward and find aspects of yourself you want to share with the world. Maybe you want to share your journey cultivating a new hobby, or you want to tell anecdotes from unique experiences in your life.

Your online consumption is also helpful in identifying your niche. Look at your feed–what kind of creators do you follow? What content do you like seeing on your FYP? How much do they reflect your interests?

Another good way to start finding your niche is by looking at your interaction with people around you. What are the areas where people ask for your opinion? Do they ask you for fashion tips? Do people compliment your cooking?

From these prompts, list out 3-5 things you enjoy, and start from there.

  3. Assess your knowledge and skills
  4. It’s time to put on your thinking hat and asses how much do you know about your potential niches. Think of it this way: if you’re told to give a 30-minute presentation with no prep, how much can you say about that niche? How much value can you offer your target audience?

Remember that having value doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be an expert. Sharing your learning journey and being transparent with your experience can make your content relatable and engaging.

  5. Dive deeper into your chosen niche
  6. Look into successful creators in similar niches. Note down what kind of content performs best (GRWMs? DITLs? Reviews?). Comments are also a good indicator of what the audience likes to see, and they can give you insight into the niche’s potential.

This is where tools like TikTok’s Creator Search Insights come in handy. The tool displays similar creators, suggested content, and even content gaps, which are topics searched by users but aren’t found in most content.

  7. Define your unique selling point
  8. Having a unique selling point helps to set you apart in your niche. Ask yourself: what are the aspects that’re missing in this niche? How can you bring a fresh spin to the topic?

Using your location as input in your content is a great way to start. You may find that a topic is popping off overseas, but you can’t find any local content around it. This is where you step in with your local insights.

Get specific–no matter how hyper-niche it is, there’s an audience out there waiting for you.

For example, if you’re a skincare enthusiast, you can focus on sharing your skincare journey, or the products you’ve tried and loved.

Keep in mind…

Your first niche might not be it, but don’t be afraid of trial-and-error. Remember to stay consistent, listen to your audience’s feedback, and pivot when necessary.
